Essential Eight for GP clinics and healthcare practices
How Australian medical practices can use the ASD Essential Eight as a security improvement framework and prepare for a scoped assessment.
Reviewed 1 November 2026 · General educational guidance for Australian healthcare organisations
What is the Essential Eight?
The Australian Signals Directorate Essential Eight is a set of mitigation strategies aimed at making systems harder to compromise. It covers application control, application patching, Microsoft Office macro settings, user application hardening, restricting administrative privileges, operating system patching, multi-factor authentication and regular backups.
Is Essential Eight mandatory for every GP clinic?
No general rule makes the Essential Eight maturity model a legal requirement for every Australian private GP clinic. It may be required by particular contracts, procurement arrangements or organisational policies. Practices should distinguish those requirements from broader privacy and health information obligations.
What would an assessment review?
A scoped review may examine endpoint and server coverage, patching evidence, account privileges, MFA configuration, backup practices and the exceptions created by clinical software or managed service providers.
How should results be presented?
Report the systems in scope, evidence observed, control gaps, limitations, risks and recommended actions. Do not claim an official ASD maturity level without testing all applicable requirements for the defined scope.
Where should a small practice begin?
Start with a system inventory and high-impact safeguards such as MFA, supported software, protected backups and administrator access review. Agree on feasible improvements with your clinical software and IT providers.
